Programmatic Afterlives explores the transformation of an existing residential building through the introduction of new programmes and contemporary forms of inhabitation. The project intervenes in a housing building designed by Rafael Bergamín on Calle Serrano, Madrid, an example of Madrid Rationalism of the 1930s. Rather than treating the existing architecture as a fixed framework, the proposal examines how its spatial, structural, and organisational qualities can accommodate new forms of collective and individual life.

The project tests a series of programmes —including co-living, housing, private clubs, a digital disconnection therapy centre, a mountaineers’ club, a school, and a writers’ residency— as different scenarios for reactivating the building. Each programme introduces specific relationships between privacy and collectivity, work and leisure, permanence and temporary occupation.

Programmatic Afterlives ultimately investigates how architecture can acquire new lives through programmatic transformation. By working with an existing modernist structure, the project questions the permanence of its original use and explores how buildings can remain adaptable as social needs, forms of work, and patterns of inhabitation change over time.
