Islandic Protocols explores the possibility of establishing an autonomous settlement on Sálvora Island through a territorial system of architectural devices, rethinking the relationship between infrastructure, resources, and collective life. The island becomes a testing ground for new forms of territorial organisation and architectural autonomy, where isolation is understood as an opportunity to rethink how a community might organise itself and relate to its territory.

The project proposes a constellation of devices addressing the community’s energy, material, and social self-sufficiency. Rather than conceiving the settlement as a single architectural object, these interventions operate as distributed infrastructure responding to the island’s resources, climate, landscape, and patterns of inhabitation. Energy production, water management, material cycles, and collective programmes become interconnected components of a territorial system.


The course places particular emphasis on understanding the specific conditions of Sálvora Island, from its landscape and climate to its resources, ecosystems, and existing patterns of inhabitation. These local conditions become the starting point for the design process, encouraging students to develop architectural responses that emerge from the territory rather than imposing a generic model of autonomy. Each proposal explores how architecture can establish a more sensitive relationship between community, landscape, and resources.

The course followed the development of each project as an integral process, from the initial concept and territorial strategy to architectural definition and communication. The work culminated in a collective exhibition, bringing together the different proposals as a shared exploration of possible futures for the island. The exhibition became both a final presentation and a collective reflection on the role of architecture in constructing new forms of inhabitation.

Together, these devices establish new relationships between territory, infrastructure, and collective life, speculating on how architecture might support alternative forms of inhabitation and generate new programmes from the constraints and possibilities of an isolated territory. The project ultimately considers autonomy as the capacity to establish new forms of interdependence between inhabitants, resources, and, ultimately, landscape.
