Domestic Frictions considers how domestic space might respond to changing ways of living and working, questioning the conventional separation between home and work and what it means to inhabit and produce within the same space. The course explores new models of housing in which domestic life and professional activity coexist, rethinking privacy, productivity, care, and everyday routines through architecture. Through a series of spatial and programmatic investigations, students examine how these overlapping activities can generate new forms of domestic organisation.

Different degrees of privacy, shared spaces, working environments, and collective facilities are tested as tools for negotiating the tensions between individual and collective life. The project considers how domestic environments can accommodate changing patterns of occupation while maintaining spaces for intimacy, concentration, encounter, and care.

Domestic Frictions ultimately uses the home as a laboratory for questioning established models of inhabitation and exploring how architecture can respond to the increasingly fluid boundaries between living, working, and caring. These transformations are also considered beyond the interior, examining their potential to reshape shared infrastructures, patterns of occupation, and the relationship between housing, work, and the wider city.
